Helophorus (Rhopalohelophorus) asperatus Rey, 1885 in the White Carpathians

Until now, only one specimen of the water scavenger beetle Helophorus asperatus had been identified in the White Carpathians in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. Since the previously known specimen was a female, it was essential to verify the presence of this species in the area by locating a male as the male genital organ provides distinct identifying features. Male specimens were collected from a periodic pool situated in the Hutě Nature Reserve in the central part of the mountain range. The primary identification features are presented through illustrative photographs, and the discovery site is described in detail. Additionally, the bionomics of this species are discussed. The findings show that H. asperatus prefers vernal periodic pools with oligotrophic water.
