The article presents the findings of the 40th year of mapping of large carnivores carried out in the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area and the adjacent ridges of Kysucká vrchovina in Slovakia, from February 16th to 17th 2024. Almost 100 volunteers from different regions of the Czech republic, Slovakia and Poland participated in the survey, who went through predetermined transects to document the presence of large carnivores. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the mapping revealed a significant presence of wolves, showing their activity on 70% of the transects. Lynx was also detected, albeit in lower numbers, with a notable direct sighting of a male. Surprisingly one individual of golden jackal was camera trapped. The study highlighted the presence of other endangered species and provided critical data on the distribution and habitat use of large carnivores in the region. The results highlight the importance of continued international monitoring and concerted efforts to conserve these species and their habitats, particularly given the ongoing challenges posed by habitat management and population dynamics. Overall, these findings contribute to a better understanding of large carnivores in Central Europe and support effective conservation strategies to maintain biodiversity.
